Xintiandi District, a distinguished and riveting district that attracts many affluent locals as well as world travelers, is characterized by its re-interpretation of Shikumen architecture, a traditional Shanghainese architectural style combining Western and Chinese elements that first emerged in the 1860's. We created a world-class gastropub that would be submersed in this distinctive area and the task at hand meant imbedding and highlighting some of the Shikumen architecture while at the same time creating a fun, casual and welcoming space to enjoy craft beers and Asian infused pub fare.

With an earth tone palette, copper metal accents, reclaimed wood floors, hand crafted stone chevron flooring, metal mesh screen partitions and brick veneer, we created a warm and welcoming gastropub where comfort was key and crafted bespoke furniture and fixtures where designed to have a home-like feeling.

From a long bar area, to a small stage tucked in between the bar and custom staircase, to high-seating areas, to semi-private dining and several custom booth areas, the space was designed to ensure the customer could enjoy the company of their guest but at the same time feel visually connected to the whole space. Custom designed hung mirrors are another design element that gives customers a peek into all the exciting happenings throughout.

The Refinery, a casual yet refined gastropub tucked in the magical Shikumen district of Xintiandi.
